After applying to one of the 30+ Pioneer research areas, students are placed into a concentration within that area within which the research is undertaken.
Unlike most of the programs on this list, Pioneer’s Research Institute is itself accredited — most programs only offer credit through an accredited institution, but here the oversight extends to the institute conducting the review. Pioneer Academics offers four college credits for completing the research program.
Because it’s fully online, it’s available to any Georgia student, regardless of proximity to Atlanta or Athens. Scholars design their own research question with guidance from a faculty mentor, working through the full research cycle rather than joining a project that’s already underway.
SRA places Atlanta-area high schoolers directly in a Georgia Tech College of Sciences lab, matched to a faculty mentor based on the student’s stated interests. Students work full-time for the summer as part of an active research group, rather than a standalone student project.
The program is free and specifically encourages students from backgrounds historically underrepresented in STEM to apply. It’s a strong option for a Georgia Tech-adjacent student who wants direct lab exposure without a program fee, though placement depends on which labs have space that year.
MIT PRIMES-USA is a year-long, mentor-guided research program in mathematics, open to strong students anywhere in the country outside Greater Boston, including Georgia. Students meet weekly online with an MIT-affiliated mentor to work through original, unsolved problems, often producing work that could support a research paper.
Because it is limited to sophomores and juniors and demands prior comfort with proof-based mathematics, it suits a narrower group of students than most programs on this list. The Georgia Tech Research Institute, Georgia Tech’s applied research and development arm, hires a cohort of Georgia high schoolers each summer as paid interns working alongside GTRI engineers and scientists on real technical projects across the institute’s science and engineering divisions. It’s one of the more competitive high school research internships in Georgia specifically built around paid, applied technical work rather than an academic research paper.
Because GTRI’s work includes federally sponsored research, applicants must meet U.S. person status requirements, which rules out some international and visa-holding students who might otherwise be eligible for other programs on this list.
R.E.A.L. gives students from underrepresented backgrounds in STEM a five-week preview of research culture in Georgia Tech labs, paired with a teacher who has been accepted into Georgia Tech’s GIFT program. Hosted by Georgia State’s Center for Behavioral Neuroscience, ION pairs students with a neuroscience faculty mentor for a multi-week research project, after an introductory course and orientation. Weekly workshops cover scientific communication, research ethics, and other special topics in neuroscience alongside the lab work itself, and the program ends with an opportunity to publicly present findings to mentors and the neuroscience community.
Because housing isn’t provided, it works best for students who can commute into downtown Atlanta for the summer — a real constraint for students living further from the metro area.
Named for the pioneering surgical technician Vivien Thomas, this Morehouse School of Medicine program has placed high schoolers as apprentices in biomedical research labs since 2002, working alongside MSM faculty to learn laboratory technique, research methodology, and data presentation. Since its founding, close to 200 students have completed the program, making it one of the longer-running biomedical research pipelines for Georgia students, with a specific mission of increasing minority representation in the biomedical sciences.
Unlike most other programs on this list, VTRSP charges tuition rather than paying a stipend, and — as of this writing — offers no scholarship option, which is worth budgeting for directly.
The Georgia Cancer Center at Augusta University places students in active cancer research projects spanning cell biology, immunology, genomics, and population health, with lab-based and non-lab tracks depending on age and interest. It’s one of the only free, structured research programs on this list based outside the Atlanta metro area.

Most Atlanta research programs for high school students cluster within a short drive of Georgia Tech, Emory, or Georgia State, which is a real barrier if you live in another part of the state and can’t relocate for the summer. Online programs remove that constraint entirely — a Georgia student in Savannah or Columbus has exactly the same access to Pioneer’s Research Institute or MIT PRIMES-USA as a student a mile from Georgia Tech’s campus.
Cost and eligibility are worth checking early, not last. Some of these programs are entirely free and even pay a stipend; others charge several thousand dollars, occasionally without financial aid.
