The Aspirnaut Summer Research Internship places Michigan high school students directly into life sciences laboratories at the University of Michigan’s Life Sciences Institute. Interns join active research projects led by faculty scientists and contribute to ongoing discoveries across fields including biology, chemistry, neuroscience, and molecular biology. Students contribute to different facets of cutting edge research, including data collection and source synthesis.
Over six weeks, interns develop laboratory skills, learn research methodology, collect data, and present their findings at a program symposium. The program also includes professional development activities, college advising, and networking opportunities with researchers and students from other U-M summer programs. No prior research experience is required.
The Pioneer Research Institute is the only fully accredited online research experiences for high school students, and it is accessible to students anywhere in Michigan. Students conduct original, independent research one-on-one with a university professor and complete a formal research paper — rather than simply attending lectures or following a fixed course curriculum.
Pioneer’s research institute is itself accredited, with academic oversight and a transcript from Oberlin. Students earn 4 accredited, generally transferable college credits for their work. The application requires approximately nine hours and interview for finalists. Research areas span STEM, social sciences, and humanities, with students choosing their own research topic within their concentration.

The Summer Science Program is one of the most prestigious pre-college research experiences in the country, and Albion College in Michigan is one of its 13 host campuses for 2026. SSP immerses students in collaborative, hands-on scientific research in fields such as astrophysics, biochemistry, bacterial genomics, and cell biology. Students work in teams of three to complete an original research project from start to finish.
SSP is need-blind in admissions, and the organization commits to meeting 100% of demonstrated financial need for every admitted student. For students from families with incomes under approximately $75,000, the program is typically free.
Through being a residential program, having a rigorous curriculum, and maintaining a decades-long track record, SSP represents one of the most substantive research experiences a Michigan high school student can pursue without leaving the state. BioMed Focus is a paid, full-time summer research program that places students directly into biomedical laboratories at Michigan Medicine. Each student is paired with a research mentor — typically PhD mentors or postdoctoral fellows — to complete a hypothesis-driven independent research project. In addition to lab work, students complete a science communication course and a college preparatory course.
The program culminates in a written research manuscript and an oral presentation at a science communication course symposium. There is also a college prep component of the program, where students learn about scholarship opportunities and future science careers.
BCAP provides a structured introduction to biomedical research for high school students interested in health sciences careers. Students work with senior research and clinical faculty on independent research projects, which they present at the program’s annual research symposium.
The program runs Monday through Thursday (up to five hours per day), with Fridays dedicated to lab-safety training, clinical and lab skills practice (microscopy, pipetting, gel electrophoresis, phlebotomy, CPR), professional development, and networking with healthcare professionals.
MAP gives high school students the chance to experience college life while conducting research alongside MSU faculty in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. At $15 per hour, this is one of the few paid research positions available to high school-age students in Michigan.

MIT PRIMES-USA is a free, year-long distance mentoring research program for students with exceptional mathematical talent, and it is fully accessible to Michigan students. The Genetics Immersion Program places high school students into active research laboratories in U-M’s Department of Human Genetics. Each student is assigned a PhD/graduate student and postdoctoral mentor and completes a six-week research project focused on genetics and genomics. The program is designed to build problem-solving skills and introduce students to the scientific research process.
Note that for the 2026 cohort, GIP is only open to students in the Wayne-Westland community school district. Students outside this district should check back for future eligibility changes.
HERO introduces Michigan high school students to careers in cancer care, cancer research, and oncology-related fields through the University of Michigan’s Rogel Cancer Center. The Healthcare Experience in Research & Oncology through the University of Michigan’s Rogel Cancer Center is also virtual and introduces students to cancer research and oncology careers, with only a short two-day in-person orientation. Virtual programs can be especially valuable for students in areas of Michigan that are far from major university campuses.
Research programs can prepare students to thrive at highly selective institutions by allowing students to practice skills that are difficult to develop in a traditional classroom: formulating research questions, working independently under mentorship, analyzing data, and communicating findings. While the research journey can certainly add to an application, it does not function (and certainly should not be seen) as a “shortcut” for gaining acceptance to a highly selective institution.
