Synopsis: How has the Brazilian government’s mitigation efforts exacerbated both the spread of COVID-19 and inequalities in Brazil? President Bolsonaro dismissed his own government’s public health guidelines, causing Brazil to be the third worst-hit country for infections, and resulting in hospital bed and ventilator shortages. Economic mitigation only resulted in a decline in GDP, most affecting populations low on the socioeconomic spectrum. Black and indigenous Brazilians have been the worst hit, both economically and from the pandemic. Despite poor mitigation efforts, Brazil has two partnerships currently in the third phase of vaccine development.
