Students at almost any Pittsburgh school have access to summer research opportunities across biomedical science, neuroscience, public health and health sciences, computer science, mathematics, and environmental science. Most of these programs can be completed without leaving the city. That said, not every program on this list is Pittsburgh-based; a few of the best-fitting options for local students are virtual or national programs that happen to be excellent fits regardless of geography.

The UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Academy places high school students directly inside active cancer research labs across the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC.
Students are assigned to one of nine research sites — including cancer biology, immunology, and computational biology — where they work full-time alongside faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students for the length of the program. Because most sites are wet labs, this is one of the more hands-on biomedical research experiences available to Pittsburgh high schoolers.
Gene Team places Pittsburgh-area high school students in collaborative teams working on a current biomedical research project from a University of Pittsburgh Department of Biological Sciences lab. Rather than assigning students an independent project, Gene Team teaches state-of-the-art laboratory technique through a shared, faculty-guided research effort, paired with weekly sessions on college readiness.

The Pioneer Research Institute is best suited for Pittsburgh students who want to complete original, one-on-one research with a university professor without needing to commute to a lab. Because the program is fully virtual, students aren’t limited to whatever research is happening at a local institution — they can pursue a research concentration in fields ranging from economics to computer science to the humanities, guided individually by a faculty mentor for a full term. The Research Institute is the only fully accredited online research institute for high school students, with credit issued through Oberlin College.

Magee-Womens Research Institute’s summer internship gives students their own research project in reproductive biology, women’s health, or infant health, under the guidance of an individual faculty investigator.
Unlike programs that rotate students through observation-based experiences, MWRI interns are expected to contribute to a specific ongoing study and present their findings at a formal internship presentation day at the end of the program — a structure that gives students genuine ownership over a research question.
ACS Project SEED, run locally by the Pittsburgh Section of the American Chemical Society, places economically disadvantaged high school students, including those from underrepresented backgrounds, in a hands-on chemistry research lab at Duquesne University.
Students spend eight to ten weeks conducting lab work on an independent or small-group research project, culminating in a written report or poster, and some go on to present at a national ACS meeting. Because eligibility is income-based rather than tied to grade level or residency, Project SEED opens a funded research pathway to students who might not otherwise have access to one, and participants who complete the program can later compete for ACS SEED college scholarships.
RTP is less of a single program than a portal connecting motivated Pittsburgh high schoolers interested in clinical or basic science research within Pitt’s Schools of the Health Sciences with individual Pitt faculty members who are willing to mentor a student researcher.
Each faculty mentor determines the project’s dates, weekly schedule, goals, and learning objectives. Because the program does not currently match high school students with faculty mentors, it is best suited to self-directed students who can identify and secure a willing Pitt faculty mentor.
SAMS combines a faculty- or graduate-student-advised STEM research project with structured coursework, writing workshops, and college-readiness support, while strongly encouraging applications and access for underrepresented and first-generation students.
It’s a fully-funded, residential experience on Carnegie Mellon’s campus — a meaningful advantage for Pittsburgh-area students who want a live-in college experience without leaving the region. Because SAMS blends research with a broader access mission, it’s best understood as an academic bridge program rather than a pure research placement.

EcoLeader Academy is the most explicitly interdisciplinary program on this list, covering ecosystems, environmental policy, food systems, and environmental justice rather than a single lab-based research question. High school students interested in environmental science research broadly — policy, sustainability, and community service projects — will find EcoLeader Academy a better fit than a traditional lab placement, and the program’s weekly structure makes it more compatible with other summer commitments than a full-time residential option.
PRIMES-USA is a strong option for Pittsburgh students with exceptional mathematical ability who want a fully remote, year-long research experience mentored by graduate students and faculty from MIT and other universities, or by local mentors selected by PRIMES. Because the program focuses on advanced mathematics, with some applied projects in theoretical computer science and computational biology, it’s a narrower fit than most programs on this list, and is best suited to students who have already exhausted their school’s math offerings and are looking for a genuinely open-ended research problem.

Summer Science Program is a nationally recognized residential option for Pittsburgh students willing to travel, offering team-based original research in astrophysics, biochemistry, bacterial genomics, or cell biology. Because SSP runs across 16 host campuses, including Lehigh University and the College of Wooster, rather than a single Pittsburgh location, it’s less of a local option and more of a national program worth considering alongside the region’s university-based offerings — particularly for students whose interests (like observational astrophysics) aren’t well served by programs closer to home.

Among these summer programs for high school students in Pittsburgh — and the handful of virtual, year-round options mixed in — the right choice comes down to three questions:
Students who want hands-on lab experience and don’t mind commuting will find strong options in the UPMC Hillman Academy, Gene Team, MWRI’s internship, and the ACS Project SEED and Phipps programs — all of which place students inside an active Pittsburgh institution.
Students who want a nationally competitive, fully independent research experience — without being limited to whatever project happens to be available locally — are better served by a virtual, mentor-driven option like the Pioneer Research Institute, where students conceive their own research question and work one-on-one with a professor for a full term rather than joining an existing lab’s agenda.
Students weighing a residential experience should compare CMU’s SAMS program locally against a national option like SSP, depending on subject focus and how far they’re willing to travel.
Timing matters as much as fit. Several local programs — Gene Team, CMU’s SAMS, and Phipps’ EcoLeader Academy among them — post application deadlines as early as February and March for a program that doesn’t start until June. Students who wait until spring break to start researching options may already have missed these windows.
Whichever path you choose, the strongest applications come from programs that offer real mentorship and let students walk away with a genuine piece of original work — not simply a certificate of participation.

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Academy, Gene Team, the MWRI internship, ACS Project SEED, Pitt’s RTP, CMU’s SAMS program, and Phipps’ EcoLeader Academy are all free to attend, with several offering a stipend or honorarium. The Pioneer Research Institute and the Summer Science Program have tuition costs, but commit to meeting up to 100% of demonstrated financial need for eligible families.
A research program typically guides a student through an independent research question, from formulating the question to producing a final presentation, paper or project, often under the mentorship of a single faculty member, as in the Pioneer Research Institute or Gene Team. A research internship, by contrast, more often rotates students through an institution’s existing operations and departments, emphasizing career exposure over a self-directed research product.
Selectivity varies a lot. The Pioneer Research Institute admits below 30% of applicants, CMU’s SAMS program is estimated at 5–10%, and several Pittsburgh hospital and university programs, including UPMC Hillman Academy and Gene Team, don’t publish official acceptance rates at all. Students should treat unpublished rates as a signal to research the program’s application requirements carefully rather than assuming a lower barrier to entry.
