The KEYS Research Internship at the University of Arizona’s BIO5 Institute is one of the most substantive free research programs available to Arizona high school students. Over seven weeks, participants complete an initial training week in bioscience and data science techniques before joining an active university research laboratory, where they work directly under faculty mentorship for six weeks. The program concludes with a public showcase at which students present their findings.
Students with a particular interest in molecular biology will find a concentration of lab placements in that area, given the program’s institutional home within UArizona’s Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology — most available mentors and projects reflect that disciplinary emphasis.

The Summer Science Program is one of the most selective and well-regarded summer research programs available to U.S. high school students. Participants spend 39 days working in small teams on original research in observational astronomy, biochemistry, or data science — depending on the campus — with direct instruction from professional researchers and working scientists.
Prospective applicants who need assistance beyond the standard sliding scale should review SSP’s financial aid documentation directly on the program’s website, where the details of what is covered — and how award amounts are determined — are published transparently by campus.

SIMR places high school students in working laboratories at Stanford School of Medicine for eight weeks each summer. Students are assigned to a lab pursuing a medically-oriented project and work alongside faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students on active research.
Stipends are available for select participants. Eligibility requires U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, current enrollment in a U.S. high school, and a minimum age of 16 by program start. One important consideration for Arizona students: SIMR’s selection process explicitly prioritizes local Bay Area applicants, and the program advises non-local students to review this policy in its FAQ before applying. Competition from outside the Bay Area is substantially more difficult.

MIT PRIMES (Program for Research in Mathematics, Engineering and Science) is a year-round, remote research program that pairs high school students with MIT graduate students and faculty on original problems in mathematics and theoretical computer science.
PRIMES USA is the national track, open to students anywhere in the country who communicate with their mentors via video conference. The program runs from January through December and carries no tuition. Eligibility is limited to current high school sophomores and juniors residing in the United States.
Selection is based primarily on a required problem set that assesses mathematical maturity and problem-solving ability; the acceptance rate is in the single digits. This online program prepares students for future careers as researchers in mathematics.

The Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix offers a competitive five-week summer research program for Arizona high school students.
Barrow is consistently ranked among the world’s leading neurological research centers, and the program gives students working access to its laboratory environment. Participants work under the mentorship of experienced researchers on projects involving disease mechanisms, neuroscience, and potential treatments for neurological conditions.
The program focuses on neurological disease mechanisms, neuroscience research, health research, and potential treatment pathways — giving students an unusually concentrated introduction to a specialized research field at one of the world’s most active neurological research centers.
For students oriented toward healthcare careers, this in person program provides a hands on research experience where the clinical application of the science is explicit — the work connects directly to diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes for neurological conditions, rather than to abstract basic science.

Barrett Summer Scholars is a short-form, residential academic enrichment program at Arizona State University that gives high school students an early experience of college-level coursework. Available tracks span molecular sciences, health sciences, engineering, computer science, and other fields.
It is not a research program in the traditional sense — students do not complete an original study or work in a faculty lab — but it is a practical entry point for students who want to test their aptitude and interest in university STEM before committing to a longer or more intensive program.
Sessions are four days, split by grade level: rising 9th–10th graders in late May, rising 11th–12th graders in early June. The program is held at ASU Tempe and costs $800, which covers housing, meals, and materials. Limited need-based scholarships are available.
Every program on this list has an application process, a deadline, and a limited number of spots. There is another pathway that most guides do not discuss: identifying a faculty member whose research interests match your own and writing them directly to ask about joining their lab.
This approach — sometimes called cold-inquiry outreach — is less structured but potentially more substantive than any formal program. Faculty members at research universities regularly work with motivated high school students, particularly during the summer when graduate students and postdocs are most active. The barrier to securing this kind of placement is not primarily prestige or test scores. It is knowing how to write a targeted, credible outreach message.
A strong outreach email is short and specific. It includes a brief description of the student’s academic background and interests, a reference to one or two papers or ongoing projects from the faculty member’s recent work, a direct ask (typically a summer volunteer or part-time placement of defined scope and duration), and contact information. The email should not describe interest in “research in general” — it should describe a student who has already engaged with the faculty member’s work and has a specific reason for wanting to contribute to it.
A strong interest in a specific subfield is, in practice, the most important qualification: faculty are far more responsive to students who can speak directly and specifically about their work than to students who express general enthusiasm for science or a broad research area.
Finding the right research program requires comparing your specific goals — credit, mentorship depth, subject focus, cost — against what each program actually delivers, not just its marketing claims. The categories below are designed to help with that comparison.
If you want the most academically rigorous experience available: The Summer Science Program, Stanford SIMR, MIT PRIMES USA, and the Pioneer Research Institute are among the most selective and credentialed programs open to Arizona students.
If cost is a primary concern: KEYS, Helios Scholars at TGen, Barrow, NASEP, and the UArizona MSRP program are all free or paid. The Pioneer Research Institute also meets 100% of demonstrated financial need. Cost alone is not a reason to remove a program from your list — most of the strongest Arizona-based programs are also the most accessible.

Programs that invest in professional skills — presenting findings clearly, collaborating with mentors, managing timelines, and giving and receiving critical feedback — prepare students for the collaborative realities of research work in ways that purely academic programs often do not.
For students seeking structured, credit-bearing research with strong institutional oversight, the KEYS Research Internship at UArizona, Helios Scholars at TGen, and Pioneer Research Institute are among the most substantive options available.
For nationally competitive programs open to Arizona students, the Summer Science Program and Stanford SIMR both offer rigorous research environments with strong institutional backing.
The right program for any individual student depends on their subject interests, schedule, eligibility, and financial circumstances.
The distinction matters and is worth applying directly.
A 2023 investigation by ProPublica and the Chronicle of Higher Education examined the online, for-pay mentorship industry that has grown around high school research programs and found significant variation in what students actually receive. The investigation focused specifically on virtual programs that market themselves as research experiences — and found that some deliver genuine mentorship with meaningful academic outcomes, while others primarily deliver a credential without corresponding intellectual development.
The programs included in this guide were selected because each can identify a defined research setting, a specific mentor relationship, or an institutional structure that makes academic accountability possible.
That does not mean they are all equivalent: a program in which a student advances an original research question is fundamentally different from one in which the student observes ongoing work or completes structured exercises.
When evaluating any program — including paid, virtual programs — ask specifically which mentor with whom the student will work closely, what the student’s defined contribution will be, and how the student will be impacted by the process.
Most programs on this list do not require prior research experience. MIT PRIMES USA is an exception — the selection process evaluates mathematical maturity directly, and students without a strong background in proof-based mathematics are unlikely to be competitive.
Programs like KEYS, Helios Scholars, Barrow, the Pioneer Research Institute and the UArizona MSRP program explicitly welcome students who are new to research.
Arizona students have access to some of the strongest research opportunities for high school students in the country — free, paid, credit-bearing, and nationally competitive — and most families are unaware of the majority of them. The difference between students who access these opportunities and those who do not is rarely eligibility. It is almost always whether anyone helped them understand what was available and how to pursue it.
