YRP is one of the few programs on this list built specifically for students from underrepresented backgrounds in the immediate USC neighborhood, which makes it a strong option for LA Unified, Lynwood, Compton, or Inglewood students — but it is not open to students outside those districts.

Students apply to a specific campus and rank cluster preferences in fields such as engineering, computer science, biology, physics, and data science, then spend four weeks in hands-on, lab-intensive coursework led by university faculty.
COSMOS is not a full independent research internship — students do not design an original study from scratch — but the rigor of its faculty-led clusters and selectivity makes it one of the most respected STEM experiences available to California high schoolers. LA-HIP combines a full-time summer research internship — hands-on laboratory work under Saban Research Institute scientists — with biology coursework, SAT preparation, and college application workshops that continue through the following academic year.
