SIMR is designed to provide high school students in their junior or senior year with eight weeks of cutting-edge research experience on the Stanford campus, working in laboratories directly alongside Stanford faculty, Stanford researchers, and graduate students.
Academically advanced students apply to one of several research institutes — including immunology, cancer biology, neurobiology, and bioengineering — and are assigned a project within that area after admission. It’s a meaningful option for a California student whose research interest lies in history, literature, or philosophy rather than the sciences, though tuition is among the highest of any program on this list, with financial aid available. The Summer Science Program does not currently operate a California campus — its 2026 host campuses span Oregon, Colorado, Indiana, and several other states, but not California — so it’s included here as the nearest viable option for California students seeking this specific format: five weeks of residential, team-based astrophysics, biochemistry, bacterial genomics, or cell biology research.
The closest 2026 site for California students is Linfield University in McMinnville, Oregon, running an astrophysics track from mid-June to mid-July. Program fees scale to family income and top out at $11,800, with most families earning under roughly $75,000 to $100,000 attending free of charge. Pomona College’s Academy for Youth Success is a free, three-year access program for rising 9th graders from Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, or Ventura counties, combining a four-week residential summer session with programming throughout the academic year.
