Maybe you’ve started searching and exploring for research or summer programs for high school students in Ohio and found the options scattered across university websites, hospital pages, and government labs, with no easy way to compare them. You’re in good company. Ohio has a broad range of research opportunities for high schoolers — state universities, children’s hospitals, a national laboratory, and even a NASA field center all run programs within driving distance of most Ohio students, alongside virtual options open to anyone in the state.
Not every program on that list works the same way, though. Some place students inside an ongoing lab project as a research assistant. Others give students room to design and carry out their own study from start to finish. Both can be worthwhile, but they prepare a student for very different things, so it helps to understand the distinction before you start applying.
Ohio’s research landscape includes options at very different levels of rigor and structure. A five-day engineering institute at a NASA field center teaches something different than a twelve-week virtual research program in which a student writes an original paper — and a statewide entrepreneurship competition is different still. None of these formats is inherently better than another; they simply serve different goals.
Between all these modalities, however, is a common denominator that separates the strongest programs from the weakest, and it’s not prestige alone. It’s how much genuine ownership a student has over the work, and how much institutional oversight stands behind it. A program where a university department or an established research institution mentors a student and holds the final product to a defined standard gives students a different kind of ownership than a shorter, instructor-led format — both can be valuable, but they build different research skills.

Programs run by universities, government bodies, and established non-profits typically possess these qualities, giving students the closest approximation to what college-level research actually looks like, making the experience valuable college preparation.

Wright Scholars are hired as paid research assistants at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, working full-time for eight weeks alongside an Air Force Research Laboratory scientist or engineer on an active project in technology fields like aerospace systems, materials, or sensors.
Students also traditionally attend weekly lectures from AFRL scientists and take part in workshops at partner institutions such as the University of Dayton. Because the program is based at a defense research facility, applicants must be U.S. citizens and pass a background check.
The Pioneer Research Institute is a fully virtual program in which high school students complete original, undergraduate-level research with the guidance of a university faculty mentor. Students conceive their own research question, then work through a full research cycle — literature review, methodology, data analysis, and a final paper — over a 12- or 25-week term.

At the College of Wooster site, Summer Science Program participants stay overnight on campus for five weeks conducting team-based research in small groups in either biochemistry or bacterial genomics, under the guidance of visiting faculty and teaching assistants. The program is run nationally by the nonprofit SSP International, with Wooster serving as one of several host campuses.

Students in the NASA Glenn High School Engineering Institute spend a week at NASA’s Cleveland field center applying the engineering design process to real NASA mission challenges, such as reducing jet engine noise or designing airless tires for lunar rovers. Working alongside NASA technical experts, students design, build, and test their own prototypes over the course of the institute, and gain hands-on experience with real NASA engineering problems, condensed into a single intensive week.
MIT PRIMES-USA is a yearlong, remote research program in which selected sophomores and juniors are matched with a a graduate student or faculty mentor from MIT or another university to investigate an open problem in mathematics or theoretical computer science. Students meet with their mentor regularly throughout the school year, working well beyond standard coursework toward original results in their chosen area. The Ross Mathematics Program uses the “Ross Method” to teach number theory and proof-based mathematical thinking, having students discover concepts through demanding problem sets alongside daily lectures and small-group discussions. For Summer 2026, one of its two sites runs at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio. It’s best suited for students who love abstract math and want an intensive, proof-heavy environment. High school juniors and seniors in the Explorations in Neuroscience Research Internship work directly with an Ohio State research mentors in an active neuroscience, neurological injury, or neurodegeneration lab. They gain experience with laboratory techniques, scientific writing, and research communication. The NIH-funded program includes a weekly journal club, formal training in scientific writing and communication, and a final poster presentation of each student’s findings.
Interns in Ohio State’s Research Internship Program are placed in a CFAES Wooster faculty lab for ten weeks of research across disciplines spanning entomology, plant pathology, horticulture and crop science, animal science, and food animal health. Interns work a minimum of 30 hours per week and close the program with by presenting their findings at a final symposium. Because applicants must be 18 by May 1 to participate, this program is best suited for graduating seniors rather than current juniors.
The Youth Engaged in Science program places Cleveland-area high schoolers in a Case Comprehensive Cancer Center research lab for six weeks of full-time work, following an initial week of lab-safety and cancer-biology training. Students work directly under a scientist mentor and close the program with a research presentation. Eligibility is limited to students attending a Cleveland-area high school.
The Research Intensive Summer Experience (RISE) places students in a Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute lab, working with a faculty advisor and a graduate-student mentor on a real biomedical research question over eight weeks. This specific track is limited to rising high school seniors at the Cleveland School of Science & Medicine (CSSM) — students outside that school should look at Lerner’s broader high school lab-placement opportunities instead.
Selected high schoolers live on Kenyon College’s campus for two weeks in the Kenyon Review Young Writers Workshop, writing daily across fiction, poetry, and nonfiction in small groups led by professional writer-instructors. The program emphasizes individual conferences and peer critique over grades, making it a strong fit for students who want sustained, mentored practice in creative writing.
Akron Children’s Rebecca D. Considine Research Institute places high school and college students in pediatric research projects on a project-by-project basis, working alongside researchers, physicians, and healthcare professionals. Because placements depend on mentor availability and active research needs each term, students interested in participating should contact the institute directly to ask about current openings rather than expect a fixed application cycle.
Through Kent State’s Science Experience Internship, Ohio high schoolers already admitted to the university’s College Credit Plus program are placed with a Kent State faculty member in a STEM field department such as chemistry, biology, physics, or geology. It runs over a 15-week semester, with students committing a few hours each week to a schedule coordinated directly with their faculty mentor.
Ohio STEP is a statewide competition in which students identify a real-world problem and design a STEM-based entrepreneurial solution, working independently or in small teams over the course of the school year. Ohio STEP is a self-directed track: students build their own project timeline, with optional mentoring available through the Ohio Academy of Science, before submitting their work for judged evaluation.
Green Corps places Cleveland teens in paid summer positions across Holden Forests & Gardens, spanning horticulture, animal care, conservation, and education roles. This sits alongside a green-careers curriculum that gives the students the opportunities to explore careers these fields and work directly with nature. Some placements support community ecology or plant-physiology research, giving students a paid, place-based introduction to environmental science careers.
Cincinnati Children’s Hospital is not offering its High School Senior Summer Internship Program in 2026. The hospital’s official site confirms it is redesigning the experience and expects to open applications for a newly built program in November 2026. In past years, graduating seniors shadowed a pediatric-specialty mentor part-time over eight weeks. Students interested in a future cycle should check back later this year for updated details.
Students in Ohio State’s Public Service Scholars program complete an introductory Public Affairs course through the Glenn College, then secure and complete an approved 80-hour internship with a public-sector, nonprofit, or other public-service organization of their choosing, earning six OSU credit hours along the way. It’s a strong fit for Ohio students whose interests run toward public policy or nonprofit work.
With this many summer research programs to choose from, the right answer depends less on prestige and more on what a student actually wants to walk away with. A student who wants to design and defend an original research question from start to finish will get more out of a program like Pioneer Research Institute, while students who want to conduct original research within a more structured framework might prefer MIT PRIMES-USA or the Summer Science Program. A student who wants hands-on lab exposure and a paid stipend, without the pressure of an independent project, may be better served by a placement like the Explorations in Neuroscience internship, ORIP, or the Wright Scholar program.
Location and eligibility matter as well. Several strong Ohio programs, including YES, Lerner’s RISE track, and ORIP, carry restrictions on who can apply, whether that’s attendance at a specific high school, a geographic eligibility requirement, or a minimum age by a certain date. It’s worth checking a program’s eligibility page before building an entire summer plan around it.
Ohio gives the next generation of researchers a wide set of ways to get real research experience before college, from a NASA field center to a fully virtual research institute. The strongest choice isn’t the most famous name on this list — it’s the program that matches how much ownership a student is ready to take over their own work, and gives them a mentor and institution willing to hold that work to a real standard.
